Te Pouahi Māori Medium

Nelson Central School offers two options for learning; English or Māori medium. Te Pouahi (meaning Pillars of Fire) is our Māori medium stream, where children learn in both languages and in te ao Māori, immersed in the tikanga and reo of the Māori culture.

All tamariki are welcome to learn through Te Pouahi, and we embrace all ethnicities. The opportunities that ākonga receive in Te Pouahi include learning pāngarau (maths) in te reo, reo a waha (oral language), kapa haka, wā whanau every day, and tuakana-teina (younger children learning from older).

Our kapa haka group, Tamariki Toa, have enjoyed both regional and national success and are a taonga for our school. See the 2019 Tamariki Toa Te Mana Kuratahi performance here.
